One of the most frustrating things about ageing is our loss of balance. The consequences of falling in our more mature years can result in bruises, broken bones, and a lack in confidence to get out and about. Don’t despair, regular exercises can help improve your balance and there are other things you can do to make your home safe from tripping hazards.
- Remove any rugs that could cause you to trip
- Make sure that cables are kept neat and tidy, like power leads for lamps or other electrical devices
- Don’t leave your handbag on the floor, those handle will try and trip you up
- Repair any uneven patio slabs or crazy paving
- Make sure that after winter, pathways are cleared of moss, and green slime
- Make sure rooms are well lit
- Don’t go to the bathroom at night in the dark. Try installing some sensor lights in low plug sockets to light the way.
- Wear sensible shoes or slippers. Mules or flip flops are not sensible
- Look after your feet
- Have regular eye check ups
- Alcohol can increase the chance of falling
- Join an exercise or balance awareness course like Move it or Lose it.
